In September 1971, our four original partners, Gordon Lawley, Laddie Farquhar, Bruce MacFarland, and Phil Corkum left a major oil company to start a uniquely local oil service company - Scotia Fuels. At the time, they knew that it would be difficult to start out on their own, but they all decided that the metro area would support a local company built on service and so all four set out to follow their dreams. The first couple of years, as in any business, were very challenging. They needed to grow quickly in order to support the enormous cost of equipment required to operate the business. Through perseverance and a passion for customer service they withstood the initial hardships and were able to grow the company. Most of the early success was due to the overwhelmingly positive word-of-mouth generated from satisfied customers. Our founders knew that service was to be the primary objective and ran the business with one very simple motto: "Treat our customers and employees as we would want to be treated ourselves". The company today is now owned by Gordon Lawley and Laddie Farquhar, both retired from the business but both have sons running the operations for them. The other two original owners retired their ownership in 1980. We strive to continue to provide that "little extra" that the larger companies might not have time to do. As business has changed over the years and as Scotia Fuels moves toward the future, we still try to provide that "Local Flavour" by being personal and accessible to our customers at all times. So much so, that we still answer our phones personally!
