Springtime in Nova Scotia often brings wide temperature swings that can result in warm days between cool mornings and evenings. Sometimes it can also be damp and downright cold.
Heating your home these days can be a balancing act of saving costs and staying comfortable. There are different ways to achieve this goal, some are simple and inexpensive and others more complicated and costly. One of the easier and less expensive methods is to install a programmable thermostat.
Programmable thermostats have been around for a while. Over time they have become very accurate and easy to use. The big bonus with a programmable thermostat is the ability to set the desired temperature you want for various times of the day. Generally, people like it warm when they get up in the morning, then set the temperature back during the work day, have it warm up when they arrive home and then set it back at night for sleeping. If done right your house will always be comfortable and energy
The smart technologies in new programmable thermostats learn the time needed for your heating system to reach the desired temperatures. As an example, if you set the temperature to be 18-degrees at night and 20-degrees at 7 am for breakfast, your programmable thermostat will remember how long it takes to bring the temperature to 20-degrees and will turn on the furnace early enough to reach that temperature at 7 am!
Another important improvement in these modern-day devices is thermostat accuracy. Older thermostats use mercury switches which turn the heat on and off. These switches sit on coils which can collect dust and weaken over time to become less accurate, in some cases by as much as 5-degrees! This can account for a lot of wasted energy. New thermostats include a computer chip to monitor room temperature that is accurate within .5 degrees. This difference can result in big savings. All new thermostats have this new technology.
