It may be wishful thinking to hope we soon see crocuses peeking out of the ground, but with less than three weeks before the first day of spring, it might be a good time to start thinking about getting a tune-up for your furnace.
“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” This is an age-old adage that still applies to your home heating equipment.
Regular maintenance on your heating equipment will help keep it running at peak efficiency, contribute to its longevity, and help prevent costly repairs.
A yearly maintenance check and tune-up to ensure your system is operating properly is sound protocol to keep everything working well. This annual exercise is an extensive, thorough check of your heating equipment. Expert technicians vacuum out the furnace, smoke pipe, and burner, and do the same for an oil-fired water heater if there is one on site. Safeties are checked on the equipment, the chamber and surrounding area are inspected and the oil line and oil tank are examined. Additionally, the nozzle(s) and oil filter(s) on the equipment are replaced and everything is tested for peak efficiency.
While cleaning the furnace, technicians are looking for any issues that can turn into bigger problems if left unchecked. These issues can shorten the lifespan of your heating equipment or result in failure when you need it the most. Specific attention is paid to cracked or shrinking chambers, rust around the coil area of the boiler, and cracks in a boiler or heat exchanger of the warm air furnace. Technicians also ensure the smoke pipe is in good condition and there is adequate draft for the furnace exhaust. Proper draft helps ensure peak efficiency.

Furnace maintenance does not have to be done in the fall – it can be scheduled at any time of the year, just as long as it does happen within a 12-18 month range.
